An ageing 42m distillation column at a European refinery was experiencing accelerated corrosion on internal trays and the lower shell section due to changing crude oil feedstock with higher naphthenic acid content. The operator needed to extend turnaround cycles from 3 to 5 years without replacing the entire column.
Jasmino performed a complete revamp — re-engineering the column internals, fabricating new trays from duplex stainless steel, and applying a high-temperature rubber lining to the lower shell section using our HAW Germany team for on-site application.
Our engineering team conducted a detailed wall-thickness survey and corrosion mapping of the existing column during a scheduled shutdown, identifying critical zones for intervention.
28 new sieve trays designed in duplex 2205 stainless steel for naphthenic acid resistance. Modified downcomer geometry to improve separation efficiency by 12%.
HAW Linings team applied chlorobutyl rubber lining to the lower 18m of the column shell and sump during a 4-week shutdown window. All work performed under PED supervision.
Hydrotest, spark testing, and tray-by-tray leak check completed within the shutdown window. Column returned to service on-schedule.
